Waipahu, Hawaii Car Insurance

With some 35,000 people, Waipahu can be considered part of the larger Honolulu metropolitan area and is administrated by the City and County of Honolulu. Once the capital of Oahu Island under the native administration, it later became a plantation town owned and operated by the Oahu Sugar Company, which finally shut down operations in 1995. Surrounded by a number of U.S. military installations - including Pearl Harbor - the modern community has a very military feel. Connected to downtown Honolulu via the Queen Liliuokalani Freeway (US H1), residents of Waipahu are among those in Hawaii for whom owning a car might be worth the expense.

As an ocean archipelago all motor vehicles, parts and accessories for them, as well as fuel have to be imported by ship to Hawaii. Further, as an integral part of the United States, much of this has to be imported directly from the mainland, usually California. The result is that residents of Hawaii pay a lot more to buy, maintain and operate a motor vehicle than many other Americans. All of these added expenses resulted in Forbes magazine ranking Hawaii as the worst state in the country in which to own an automobile. If you choose to own and operate a motor vehicle in Hawaii, expect to pay for the privilege.

Like most American states, Hawaii has basic minimum standards of liability insurance that must be purchased to drive legally. These are $20,000 worth of bodily injury for one person, $40,000 worth of bodily injury for all people in a particular accident, and $10,000 to cover property damage. Further, Hawaii is a no fault state that requires drivers to carry at least $10,000 on personal injury protection (PIP) insurance. Despite the high cost of owning and operating a car in Hawaii, the insurance market is very competitive and this has kept the price of car insurance fairly reasonable. In 2007 Hawaii ranked as the sixteenth most expensive state in the country in which to buy car insurance.
