Although there was a small decline in the number of car accidents in Richmond between 2007 and 2008, the decrease was minimal. 2007 saw 2,460 accidents as compared to 2,390 in 2008. Out of the 2008 accidents, thirteen people were killed and 566 were injured, both of which represent small improvements over the 2007 numbers. 106 of these accidents involved one or more drivers under the influence of alcohol and twenty-six (including one of the fatalities) involved drivers on drugs. Compared to the number of people, these rates are higher than average, probably reflecting the large number of college students in the town.
