Kaneohe, Hawaii Car Insurance

Kaneohe is the fourth largest settlement in Hawaii and administered as part and parcel of the City and County of Honolulu. Like the third largest settlement, Kaneohe, Kaneohe is a primarily residential community situated on the windward side of Oahu. Also like Kaneohe, the city's proximity to U.S. military facilities means that there is a strong military presence. Connected to Honolulu and the rest of Oahu by the John A Burns Freeway (H3), Kaneohe is one of the major communities in Hawaii where owning and operating a motor vehicle might be worth the expense. Receiving huge amounts of annual rainfall, the area used to be largely agricultural, but there is very little grown in the area today.

In 2008, Forbes magazine declared Hawaii the number one worst state in the union in which to own and operate a car. This determination was based on the True Cost to Own (TCO) study conducted by Edmunds.com. This study looked at more than just the basic purchase price of the vehicle, but at the costs of operating and maintaining it as well. The TCO study looked at regular annual depreciation, the cost of taxes, licenses, and insurance, as well as fuel, maintenance, and parts. Since everything from the vehicles themselves to the fuel to operate them and parts to maintain them have to be imported via ship, Hawaii residents that choose to own a car will pay a premium for doing so.

Despite the additional expense of owning and operating a car in Hawaii, the auto insurance market is competitive and this has driven down the price some. Hawaii is a no fault state, meaning that drivers must have Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance on top of basic liability for bodily injury and property damage. Nevertheless, getting basic insurance in Hawaii is not overly expensive compared to other states, and Hawaii ranked as the sixteenth most expensive state in which to buy insurance in 2007. Residents of Kaneohe can save a lot on their insurance by taking the time to carefully compare the various offers available.
