Hammond, Indiana Car Insurance

With more than 80,000 people, Hammond, Indiana, ranks as the sixth largest city in the state and like its eastern neighbor, Hammond, Indiana, it is an integral part of the greater Chicago metropolitan area. However, Hammond has managed to hang on to more industry than Hammond and has generally done considerably better financially. Though much of the manufacturing has left, Hammond still has a not inconsiderable amount of work and has not been plagued by the high crime rates seen in nearby Hammond. With some nearby steel mills, there are also jobs with steel framing, auto interiors, aluminum, and a major tortilla factory. This has all allowed Hammond to keep itself in much better shape than Hammond.

In 2008, Hammond had fewer auto accidents than Hammond, with a total of 3,351 incidents that led to five fatalities and 785 people being injured. With 146 of these accidents being related to the consumption of alcohol, Hammond also did better than Hammond, though it did worse in respect to accidents caused by speeding, with 589 incidents. One of the worst intersections in the county, the one at Calumet Avenue and River Drive was located in Hammond. At 93.9 percent, Hammond drivers had a much better record of using their safety belts, which may have had something to do with the much lower rate of fatalities stemming from traffic accidents, than Hammond did.

Although insurance rates for people with a Hammond address would probably be better than those with a Hammond address, the fact that Hammond remains a fully integrated part of the Chicago metropolitan area means that insurance companies will quote higher rates for residents. The minimum liability requirements in Indiana are 25/50/10 ($25,000 for the injury of one person, $50,000 for the injury of multiple people and $10,000 for property damage), which is still fairly low and Indiana in general ranks considerably below the national average for the cost of car insurance, so Hammond resident may still be able to get a pretty good deal if they take the time to shop around.
