Every car insurance company offers special discounts to draw in new customers. Not all discounts are created equally, though. Here is a list of the five best auto insurance discounts offered by the widest number of car insurance companies in the industry today.

1. Multiple Policy Discounts

A multiple policy discount saves you money if you purchase more than one type of insurance through the same company. Most insurance companies sell more than car insurance. You can take advantage of special pricing packages if you add a homeowner’s policy or life insurance policy through your car insurance company. This discount is especially nice because it can save you money on two types of insurance premiums at the same time.

2. Low Mileage Discounts

Many insurance companies offer lower premiums for drivers who don’t drive very often. The fewer miles you drive, the lower your risk of being involved in an accident. If you aren’t driving a long commute every morning and evening, you might qualify for this discount. Each company has different ranges of mileage that qualify for this discount, so you will need to check with your insurance company to see if you qualify.

3. Good Driver Discounts

It is no secret that a good driving history can keep your car insurance costs down. Aside from the standard rate reductions that go along with being a low-risk driver, many insurance companies also offer substantial discounts for drivers who meet certain qualifications. These discounts can increase if you maintain a safe driving history for a number of consecutive years. Good drivers usually qualify for additional perks, such as accident forgiveness or lower deductibles, which can save you money if you find yourself needing to file a claim after a long period of safe driving.

4. Membership Discounts

Another lucrative car insurance discount can be earned by joining the right organization. Car insurance companies tend to affiliate with other groups or organizations to offer special discounts to the members of those groups. Being a member of AAA or an employee of a local manufacturer could earn you substantial discounts on your car insurance costs. You can find out about potential car insurance discounts by checking with your place of employment and any group, club, or organization that you belong to. If discounts are available, they will have a list of their car insurance affiliates in your area.

5. Good Student Discounts

The most expensive demographic for car insurance is between the ages of 16 and 25. Any discount that can cut down those high insurance costs is worth looking into. Almost every car insurance company offers some sort discount for high school and college students who maintain a 3.0 grade point average. The discounts can apply to a policy that is held by the student individually, or they can apply to a policy that is tied into a parent’s insurance coverage. Either way, good student discounts can ease the pain of buying the necessary car insurance coverage for an adolescent or young adult.

The federal government’s Cash for Clunkers program also known as the Car Allowance Rebate System or CARS was so popular that it ran out of money too quickly, and needed another funding amount.

In this program, the new car purchased had to achieve ten more miles to the gallon than the car that was traded in.

This plan was put in place to:

Help the ailing car industry,

Help with auto pollution rates, and

Help the purchaser obtain a more reliable car.

It offered eligible owners rebates of up to $4,500.00 depending on the car being purchased and other factors.

Because of this program, rather than continuing a dismal decent, car sales have spiked to their highest rate since September of last year.

The ‘Cash for Clunkers’ program has had far reaching effects that benefited not just the car industry and the clunker owners; it also was a big boost to the auto insurance industry. They have had a large influx of new policies taken out by these new car owners.

By the time the program ended, more than 700,000 vehicles had been sold under it by dealers across the United States.

This large influx of new cars to be insured gave the insurance companies opportunities to market their products and services to the new owners. This has been a very welcome boost to an industry that has been suffering due to increased medical expenses as well as rising insurance claims and investments that have performed under expectations.

With young students heading to college, the burden of educational and other costs on the family budget can be heavy, especially in this time of world financial upheaval. Adding a vehicle to the expense of sending a child to college can cause even more financial stress on the family.

There are; however, ways a student can help cut the financial responsibilities to the family budget.

Knowing exactly how much insurance coverage is needed is one good start. Dropping unneeded coverage can help lower the insurance cost, different cars can subsist under different insurance amounts.

A less expensive vehicle can mean less on insurance rates due to the cost of repair or replacement.

With an older car, you may want to leave off the comprehensive and collision coverage as the repair or replacement of the car would negate any value achieved in that sort of coverage. The general practice is that cars with a value worth under $3,000.00 would not be money smart to insure with comprehensive or collision.

Money can be saved by adding the young driver to the family insurance rather than having a separate policy specifically for that individual.

The way an insurance company looks at it, an inexperienced driver living with experienced driver parents are much less of a risk for an accident. Keeping the driving record clean and the grade point average high can also have a strong effect on insurance premiums.

.
In this difficult economy, it can be difficult keeping all your bills paid, especially the bills for auto insurance on young drivers. Insurance on young drivers is affected by many different things. Some of these things you can change and some you cannot
Because young male drivers are more apt to get into accidents than young female drivers, their insurance rates will be higher. You cannot affect this unless you get your child a sex change, which is more expensive than paying the insurance and it may still not get the rate changed, so this one you will just have to accept.

Some other factors that will affect your insurance premiums are:

Age

Geographic location

Driving records

Car make and model

Driving distance to work

Do your research before purchasing a car or helping your young driver purchase a car.

To make sure your premiums remain low, make sure that

The car is not high on the desirability list for theft

That it is not pricey

And that it is not considered a sports car.

The more steps you take in this direction the less your insurance payment will inevitably be. Your young driver can also have a positive effect on the insurance rates by having good grades in school. Good grades are indicative of a person that is mature and willing to take on responsibility. Insurance companies look positively on this and reward the student with lower insurance rates.

If you’re about to buy a used car, be sure to know what you’re doing when you insure it. The mileage that it has on it will affect what kind of insurance you want to get, and so will the value of the car. If it’s financed, no matter what the price of the vehicle, you’ll have to get full coverage. The finance company or bank that you’re using will require it.

However, if you don’t owe anyone for the car and it’s free and clear on the title, you can only get the minimum coverage required by state law if you want to. For a very inexpensive, older car, that’s usually a great idea. Otherwise, it’s a better idea to get more insurance so that your car will be covered in an accident.

Insurance can also cover fire, theft, and glass breakage, so you’ll have to consider the value of the used car that you purchased and whether it’s a better idea to have that kind of coverage. If the car is at all expensive or it would be a serious hardship to get it fixed or replaced if something should happen to it, more coverage is a good idea. You’ll be much safer that way, and you won’t have to worry so much about what you’d do if there was a problem or how much it would cost.

In New York State, there’s a new kind of driving school, and it’s geared toward adult drivers who want points removed from their license for past traffic infractions and/or who want to see lower insurance rates. These lower rates generally come along when a person goes to driving school and can prove successful completion of it.

By keeping that in mind, motorists can save a lot of money. However, not everyone has time to go to driving school, and the people who work all day and have families and are busy can now make the choice to go to driving school online, in the comfort of their own home. When they do that, they use a computer program and steer a virtual car around obstacles.

They go through exercises, ‘drive’ a car, answer questions, and have a specific period of time in which to complete the program. When they do, they get proof of that. They can show that proof to their insurance company and to the drivers license bureau, allowing them to improve their driving record if need be, and also allowing them to save more money on their car insurance. In tight economic times that’s a real boost, and the class only costs around $50. By learning how to drive more safely the chance of an accident is reduced, and that’s well worth the price of these kinds of driving schools.

Every state in the nation except for Wisconsin and New Hampshire requires that you have liability insurance. The level of mandatory coverage varies from state to state. It is easy to think that this is enough to protect yourself and your property in the event of an accident, particularly since you expect them to be a relatively rare event in your life. Liability insurance represents the bare minimum of coverage however. It is the lowest amount of insurance coverage that your state thought that you could get away with.

As a result, having only liability insurance can lead to your being woefully underinsured, particularly if you are involved in an accident with an uninsured or underinsured driver. You might be covered, but if someone else is injured in an accident where you are at fault, their medical expenses might not be totally covered. If they decide to sue you for damages, you will have no protection for your personal property.

Additional insurance can cover the costs of repair for damages caused by natural disasters like fir or flood as well. It can even help protect you in the event of a breakdown, coving roadside assistance or towing. Although further insurance coverage can add up, you can raise your deductible to help keep your monthly costs down. In the end, you’ll be glad you have the coverage when the moment arrives that you finally need it.

Yes. You not only really have to have car insurance; you will inevitably find that you really need it. To begin with, in most states some level of insurance is required by law. Getting into an accident without proper insurance coverage in a place like Oregon can land you in a world of hurt. But even without the law, having some car insurance is just sensible. The fact of the matter is that a car is one of the most expensive items that you will buy in you life. It’s an investment and you want to treat it as such.

No matter how skilled and defensive a driver you are, you will inevitably get into an accident at some point in your life. Car insurance cannot protect you from that, but it can help you protect yourself financially in the event of an accident. If the accident is your fault, the proper insurance will help you cover the damages to the other parties involved. Regardless of whose fault it is, your insurance will help you protect your investment. Car insurance can also have other benefits. It can help pay for medical bills after a crash, protect you from uninsured or under insured drivers, and it can cover the effects of natural disasters. Some policies include perks like roadside assistance or free towing service. These services can greatly ease the stress and difficulty associated with a breakdown. Car insurance is literally, legally required and even if it weren’t, it just makes sense to have it. It is the single most important thing you can do to provide yourself with peace of mind on the road.

Insurance companies are more inclined to suggest more complete coverage of 100/300/100. meaning; 100,000, 300,000 and 100,000.

Injury treatment tends to be very similar in cost throughout the states, as such, you will want to take more into consideration your driving habits and record when procuring your automobile insurance. If you are in an area where property damage could easily overrun your limits, you may want to reconsider your limits so you can be sure you are fully covered (for instance in some areas, landscape alone could have a value over your limit). You will also want to take into consideration your own ability to cover any of the bodily injury or property damage overages that might occur.

When you are considering your coverage amounts, you will also want to be sure you are covered for uninsured motorist. Some policies automatically contain it and others don’t, this will help in determination as to which policy best fits all of your needs.

Some companies offer accident forgiveness, this feature can add more to your coverage cost, but if you seem to be somewhat prone to accidents, this may be a very viable coverage option for you. Another thing to prepare for and look into if you have children is the ‘good student’ discount. If your son or daughter has a ‘B’ or above average, you may get anywhere between a five and twenty-five percent discount, just another good reason to support your child in school.

The other day I had friends at my house. We were busy doing things and as time passed, we got hungry. No one wanted to order pizza, but no one else wanted to go pick up food for the group either. I tried to trick my friend into going and I told him that I would let him drive my car if he picked it up for us. What a great offer – right? He did not have to waste money on gas and my car is brand new. My friend rejected my offer saying that if something were to happen he did not want to be held responsible. I told him I had insurance. He said that did not matter because he was driving.

If you have insurance does it cover anyone who is driving – even my friend? At first, I thought my friend was simply lying to me to get out of picking up food for the group. However, after I researched the matter a little further, I realized that he might be on to something. Although, in most situations, as long as you give the person permission to drive the car they are usually covered it usually depends on your insurance policy.

Some insurance companies have exclusions written into their policies that prevent people, including your friends, family members, or roommates from driving your car. You might want to check this out before you let someone get behind the wheel of your vehicle.
